The Admiral Grace

The Admiral Grace Tote is PDF Pattern created to make sewing your own leather tote on your domestic machine easier. I originally drafted the pattern for thin (0.8 – 1mm) leather, it can be made in suitable vinyls or fully in fabric.

30cm (11 3/8”) high at sides
45cm (17 1/2”) wide flat across the top
28cm (11”) across at base

This pattern is named in honour of Admiral Grace Hopper, an amazing computer scientist who retired with the rank of Rear Admiral from the US Navy. For more reading A mighty girl has a blog and some books about Admiral Hopper

Hardware needed:
  • Diamond Strap Anchors, the pattern uses Diamond Strap Anchors although these can be substituted for other connectors
  • Fabric for lining – 70cm (112cm wide fabric) or 25” (44”/45” wide fabric)
  • Leather (or substitute) .65m2 or 7 square feet*
  • Interfacing – 70cm (112cm wide fabric) or 25” (44”/45” wide fabric)
  • Backing for Strap anchors – scrap leather, peltex, decovil or other firm structure 4 x 5cm x 5cm or 2” x 2”
  • Optional – 4 Rivets for straps

*The amount of leather will depend on the size and shape of the leather being used. A large kangaroo hide will fit the full bag, and two smaller hides would be recommended to ensure sufficient leather. If using vinyl it will depend on how wide the vinyl is.
